Château de Duras (Duras Castle) was first established in the 12th century but has been greatly added to over the years. Once derelict, it has now been renovated to offer visitors a truly memorable experience. For more details follow this link to an English version of their website:Château de Duras website
Every Monday morning throughout the year the centre of Duras is host to a traditional market - locally grown fruit and vegetable stalls jostle for space with sellers of handmade crafts and jewellery, clothing, spices, olives, wine and many other exciting products. A MUST for anyone visiting the area, and when staying at La Petite Gemme it is all on your doorstep (100 metres).
Always very popular, Duras night markets get going about 7 pm every Thursday during the peak summer months - get there early to grab the free seating you prefer..!! Vibrant and full of fun, most people come to meet friends, sample local wines and choose from a wide selection of hot food while enjoying live entertainment in the main square. Just 100 metres from La Petite Gemme, there is no need to nominate a driver or search for somewhere to park, just stroll there and wander home when you are ready for a great nights sleep.
There will be many opportunities to sample Côtes de Duras wines during your stay. Many people choose to visit several of the numerous independent vignerons dotted all over the local area, most offering free tastings and some going further to offer a more organised gastronomic experience - for example Domain les Bertins in St. Astier de Duras. Another alternative is to walk from La Petite Gemme down to the Maison du Vin where a wide selection of local wines are on sale, many available for free tasting, and friendly staff are on hand to assist you.Maison du Vin Duras
There are stunning beaches on the Atlantic coast near to Bordeaux (about 1hr 20mins by car to an ocean beach), but there are some lovely lake and river beaches much closer to Duras. Pictured is Lac de Clarens on the edge of Casteljaloux about 45 minutes south, a real treat for all the family. Closer still is the pretty lifeguard river beach on the banks of the Garonne river in Marmande, just 25 minutes from Duras (take "reef" shoes if you plan to swim!). Other options are available, including an outdoor public swimming pool just 10 km away in Monsegur. More details and options here:Tourist Information Swimming
